SNNA - LSAMP |
|
The Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation |
LSAMP is a nationally recognized program that supports underrepresented minority student participation in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Are you interested in learning about and gaining more skills in STEM? There is an abundance of high-paying career opportunities in STEM and a shortage of trained people in these fields. Particularly, minority individuals are the least represented. SNNA-LSAMP is a National Science Foundation grant-funded program that provides free services to students that identify as a minority and are interested in, or are working towards, a degree in STEM. CCC students can take advantage of the many benefits of the program from the time they sign up until the time they graduate or transfer.
The LSAMP Program at Coconino Community College and the College of Southern Nevada both partner with Northern Arizona University and the University of Nevada Las Vegas in order to encourage our students to pursue a higher degree in STEM upon completion of their program with us.

History of the Program
The LSAMP Program is a nationwide initiative dedicated to Louis Stokes (1925 – 2015), who was the first African American to become elected for the U.S. House of Representatives and served 30 years as the Ohio Congressman. Stokes served on a segregated army unit during WWII, following his high school graduation and went on to earn a law degree and become an attorney. Stokes was also elected as a member of the House of Appropriations Committee. He showed strong support for many bills that were intended to assist disadvantaged populations. In 2007, a Louis Stokes Museum in Cleveland, OH was opened in his honor.
The Southern Nevada Northern Arizona (SNNA) LSAMP Program was founded in 2017 and is funded by the NSF LSAMP grant HRD1712523, as an addition to the many LSAMP alliances nationwide. SNNA-LSAMP's goal is to substantially increase the number of STEM baccalaureate degrees earned at alliance institutions by students from historically underrepresented populations.

Calendar of Upcoming Events
As LSAMP Participants you are asked to please participate in at least two or more LSAMP events, participant services, or volunteer opportunities per semester. Please remember that each of these looks great on either college, internship, scholarship, or employment applications. The following calendar lists the upcoming events that you may count toward your participation.
Please keep in mind that some of these events require that you give us advance notice if you plan to attend, as we will be paying registration or admission fees for you. You can click on each event to see more details.

Stellar LSAMP Scholars
Haley Singer
Haley Singer was the winner of the Fall 2019 LSAMP Recruitment Challenge and was awarded a $50 Amazon gift card. Haley recruited a total of 5 new students into the program! She says she would like to thank all of her friends that signed up. Congrats, Haley, and thank you for all of your hard work!
Shawna Greyeyes
The first generation in her immediate family to go to college, Shawna Greyeyes gravitated toward the sciences early.
“It explains how the world works, in a way, and that appeals to me,” she said.
Currently a CCC2NAU student in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program, her goal is to continue her studies at Northern Arizona University for a degree in Environmental Science. The LSAMP program has provided her with exposure to research in STEM-related fields, and she has a mentor at NAU who helps her navigate the waters toward her degree goals.
“I want to get my degree and go back to my community on the Navajo Nation to educate the youth about the environment and how important it is …,” Greyeyes said.
