What is an AGEC-A Certificate?
AGEC-A is a 35-credit lower-division General Education curriculum block that fulfills the lower-division General Education requirements of liberal arts majors at all three Arizona State Universities. (e.g., Anthropology, Social Science, Fine Arts, and Humanities). The Arizona public universities have agreed that, if a student completes the AGEC block at the community college level, the AGEC block will be accepted at the universities.
Benefits:
- AGEC is the best way to make your credits count for most transfer degrees.
- The purpose of AGEC is to provide students attending any Arizona public community college with the opportunity to build a General Education curriculum that is transferable upon completion without a loss of credit to another Arizona public community college or university.
- When you complete an AGEC with a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA), all admission requirements are waived at all Arizona public universities. This means that you are unconditionally admitted to any Arizona public university of your choice after completing an AGEC with a 2.5 GPA.
- AGEC satisfies all lower-division liberal studies requirements at all Arizona public universities.
- Save money by completing your lower-division liberal studies requirements at CCC. On the average, Coconino Community College tuition rates are about one-third of the Arizona public universities’ tuition.
- If you have high school concurrent or dual enrollment credits, and/or Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credits (PLA may include earned credit from exams, portfolios, or other alternative learning assessments) that satisfy our General Education requirements, these credits can be counted toward an AGEC and will transfer to all Arizona public universities.
Are there class options in the AGEC-A?
Yes. There are multiple courses to choose from as you complete your AGEC-A certificate online. There are six categories (Composition, Mathematics, Physical & Biological Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and approved Options). You must complete one course in Mathematics, and at least two courses in each of the other categories. You have the opportunity to choose from the Options category or additional courses in the other five categories to complete 35 credits. There are numerous courses to choose from in each category and you can find the list on the General Studies page under “List of General Education Courses.”
There are three Special Requirements that are part of the AGEC-A. They must be met by a minimum of two courses and many courses fulfill more than one Special Requirement. You are required to take courses that meet each of the following: “W” (Intensive Writing/Critical Inquiry), “E” (Ethnic/Race/Gender Awareness), and “C” (Contemporary Global/International or Historical Awareness).
The sample Semester Sequences provided below show one way to accomplish the AGEC-A while fulfilling all the Category and Special Requirements. Be sure to consult with an Academic Advisor when selecting courses to complete. Check the Class Schedule to verify online availability.
